1: Ecotourism in the Chaco
Much of Paraguay is sparsely populated and crammed with incredible wildlife, but the Chaco is one of the most vast & beautiful wildernesses on earth. The area is of particular interest to birdwatchers, as it contains an almost unmatchable range of species
2: Cerro Cora National Park
A veritable of natural riches this National Park was set in 1990s to combat deforestation & is home to one of the worlds most diverse collection of endangered species. Look out for pre Columbian caves & stuffed animal display in the visitor center museum.
3: Hydroelectric Plant Paraguay
If you've never seen or visit a power plant before, the Hydroelectric Plant Paraguay is another of the sites to see in Paraguay. This one is basically the largest power plant in the world!
4: Museo del Barro
Museo del Barro is located in Asuncion, and it's a great museum where you can see interesting displays of the indigenous art of Paraguay.
5: Ride with the ranchers
There are dozens of estancias around the country where visitors can get a taste of rural life, ride with the cowboys, take a horse and cart tour or just sit and relax in the country drinking mate.
6: Casa De La Independencia
This is one of the main tourist attractions in Paraguay. It is also located at the heart of the country. The name of the place can be translated to House of Independence. The site is also quite historic since it is the place where revolt against the Spanish began. The historical event thus justifies its moniker. Casa De La Independencia was built in 1774.
7: Panteon de los Heroes (Asuncion)
A military guard, in typically frozen fashion, protects the remains of former president Francisco Solano Lopez and other key figures of Paraguay's catastrophic wars, in the Panteon de los Heroes. The changing of the guard happens every eight days.
8: Explore Ybycui National Park
The country's most visited and established national park, Ybycui is set in a mountainous area of forests, brooks and waterfalls. There's a good visitors centre, from where guided treks can be taken to the Guarani and Mbocaruzu falls.
9: Go fishing
Many of Paraguay's river fish provide excellent eating and fishing is a very popular activity. There are angling possibilities across the country, but the best are along the Tebicuary River at Villa Florida, the country's southernmost city (160 km from Asuncion) and a popular destination.
10: La Santisima Trinidad de Parana
This is one of the major tourist attractions in the country. It also goes by the name Holy Trinity of Parana. This site is actually named after one of the former Jesuit missions in the country. This site is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the places you should not fail to see.
11: Casa De Los Diputados
This is one of the country's prime attractions. This building is now being used as a government building and is remarkably maintained. It used to be a military college in the country. It also served as one of the government's former cultural centers. On a particular note, the building, at one point, was also used as a blood bank during one of the wars in the country.
12: Asuncion
Asuncion has a historic downtown and has been coming around and now shows signs of its rich history. It has important architectural groupings, such as the "Riviera Block," a well preserved entire city block of the city that is site of the oldest house in the city, the Cathedral, Lopez Palace, the Railroad, and the House of Independence, all of them being quite old. In regard to its modern attractions, one must mention its services, the magnificent Lirico Theater, numerous nightlife spots, huge shopping malls, restaurants and first class hotels.
13: Encarnacion
It is located less than an hour from the Jesuit Ruins of Jesus y Trinidad, declared a Treasure of Humanity by UNESCO. It also has natural attractions, such as its banks on the Parana River and its green countryside, adorned throughout with beautiful streams. It has intense business activity, connected to its Argentine neighbor Posadas.
14: Iguassu Falls
An UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, the Iguassu Falls offers a delight to your eyes. It is a fantastic view to watch as 1500 cubic meters of water falls per second.
15: Parque Carlos Antonio Lopez
Enjoy good views of Asuncion from the Parque Carlos Antonio Lopez, high above the city. The Botanical Gardens are situated in a former estate of the Lopez family on the Paraguay River. Among the many religious buildings is the Metropolitan Cathedral.
16: Parque Nacional Medeanos del Chaco
Like every national park in Paraguay, this one is breathtaking and well worth the visit. It should not, however, be attempted alone and you should never wander at night; threats include anything from jaguars to contrabandists.
17: Villarrica
This is considered the "Cultured City" of Paraguay and historically it is nicknamed "La Andariega" or keen on walking, as it has changed its location several times. With a rich history and noteworthy academic and cultural activity, it is stately and hospitable. It has diverse nearby attractions, such as the beautiful town of Yataity, where they make the delicate handicraft of Ao Po'I, and the German colonies where delicious wines and other quality products are produced.
18: Cruise the Paraguay River
Spend a few days travelling the Rio Paraguay, through the Pantanal wetlands, spotting wildlife and learning about the country's bizarre history. A popular tour travels from Concepcion, stopping at towns and national parks along the way.
19: Central Circuit route
Follow the popular 'Central Circuit', a route of some 200km (125 miles) that takes in some of the country's most interesting sites clustered around the capital. Head for San Lorenzo, the site of the university halls of residence and an interesting gothic style church.
20: Eco Reserva Mbatovi
Near to Asuncion, this well organised wildlife reserve specialises in activities to get the adrenalin flowing. Safely tied to a security rope, visitors clamber through the forests canopy, before zip lining down to earth. There are also guided walks and sightseeing spots.
