The Kismayu National Park, in the southwest, contains many common (and a few rare) East African species. Hargeisa National Park in the north contains even rarer species. A third park is located outside Mogadishu.
2: Sinbusi Beach
Just several kilometers away from Merca, Sinbusi Beach offers a nice view to tourists who like to unwind and relax. The place features huts with kitchen amenities and a private bathroom. The activities that can be enjoyed at the beach include snorkeling, swimming and diving.
3: Mogadishu
Were it not for the war lords, parts of the capital would be highly attractive to tourists. The Shanghai Old City, once the playground of the wealthy, remains one of the most scenic spots.
4: Activities in Somalia
Fishing, hunting and safaris are some of the pursuits for active travellers to Somalia. At the present time, safari companies have suspended their operations but political stability and resolution of the ongoing conflict may change that.
5: Eating Out
Before the renewal of hostilities, restaurants served European, Chinese, Italian & Somali cuisines. Local specialties included fresh seafood like lobster, prawn, squid, crab, fresh tuna & luscious tropical fruit, Somali bananas, mangoes & papaya.
6: Las Geel
Hundreds of well preserved Neolithic paintings decorate the walls of this inter connected series of caves and shelters in Somaliland. Las Geel deserves to be a UNECSO World Heritage site but sadly, due to the current political state of Somalia, and the unrecognised status of Somaliland, this is unlikely to happen any time soon.
7: Sheikh Abdul Aziz Mosque
The Sheikh Abdul Aziz Mosque is a beautiful building whose architecture and circular minarets reflect Somalia's age old close ties with the Islamic cultures of west Asia. Nobody actually knows the age of this mosque and the locals say it was not built but it came up on its own.
8: National Museum of Somalia
National Museum of Somalia is a mansion constructed for the representative of Said Bargash, the erstwhile Sultan of Zanzibar. The palace was constructed in the southern Arabian style before the Italians restored it in 1933 for use as a museum. It has fine carved doors and windows; fine pilaster work murals and frescoes decorate the walls, floor and ceilings. The Egyptian forays into the Land of the Punt, as Somalia was known, are recorded in three panels that reproduce the originals found in Theba and Deir el Bari temple. Gravestones, funeral inscriptions, coins, swords, daggers, pottery and marble work are all on display at the museum.
9: Berbera
Berbera , an important seaport in ancient times is now in a rather dilapidated condition. It was actually used to ship fresh fruits and vegetables to the British base in Aden. During the more peaceful days, Berbera was popular as a resort town with its good beaches, ruins of an Egyptian Mosque, Old Fort and Aqueduct.
10: The Shanghai Old City
The Shanghai Old City is a significant landmark in the country. Situated in Mogadishu, the place is popular for the beautiful views. In addition, it is also famous for its world-class architecture. The warlords and popular entrepreneurs in Somalia control the place.
11: War Memorial
One of the popular monuments in the country is the War Memorial in the City of Hargeisa. The place is found at the heart of the city. The monument features the Somali Airforce MiG Jet Fighter that was used from 1980 to 1990.
12: Daloh Heritage Reserve
The Daloh Heritage Reserve is found at the east of the Golis Range Forest. Some of the attractions at the site are the rivers, forests and shallow streams. The animals that can be seen at the reserve include hyenas and loins. Hiking and trekking are the activities that can be enjoyed at the reserve.
13: The Central Mosque
Found at the heart of Hargeisa, the Central Mosque is one of the places visited by Muslim tourists in the area. Many people from the Middle East go to the place to see the beautiful architecture of the mosque. However, tourists are reminded to arrange with tour guides when they go to the mosque.
14: The Independence Monument
The Independence Monument is located at the center of Hargeisa. It features a large sculpture of hand holding the country's map. Found at the base of the sculpture is the independence date of the country.
15: Kismayo
Kismayo is one of the nice and relaxing places to visit in the country is the Kismayo. This is the port of the third biggest city in the country. It is found several kilometers away from Jubba River's mouth. Many historic events happened at the site like the Somalian War.
